Unveiling Ibiza’s Ancient Monuments

by Daniel

While Ibiza is very famous for its incredible nightlife and its beautiful beaches, there is also an interesting history of the island, and it is slightly more than 5,000 years old. Struggling between the wild rhythm of the modern sides and the timely demonstration of the past witness of ancient monuments and archaeological camps that relate the history of the island,

An important monument from ancient times –Sa Caleta Phoenician settlement site which has been assigned a UNESCO World Heritage Site status. A place of Phoenician settlement, this archaeological site emerges with well-preserved houses, tombs and a defensive wall which had been inhabited hundreds years ago. Sh Sa Caleta apropunhographicintoIbiza’s roleas amaritime centeraswellasitsimportanceas a trading port inthe ancient Mediterranean.

Besides this, the Puig des Molins site, another UNESCO heritage, reveals the customs, cremations and the construction of the burial chambers of the ancient inhabitants of the island. Spread over the area from the pre-Roman to the Roman times, this vast cemetery which is carved into rocky slopes, contains thousand tombs and artifacts (from pottery to jewelry and funerary pots).

Besides that, there are also some several Archaeological unsung sites on the island that are much awaited to be unveiled. The enigma of the prehistoric Ses Païsses settlement and the mysteries revealed by rock carvings of Es Vedra renders the island’s natural landscape deeply historical and bewitching.

Infamous for its clubbing scene, Ibiza however, I felt, was mainly about its ancient monuments, standing like irrefutable proof of the island’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, going back through millenniums. However, through the endeavors of cultural enshrinement and protection of these ancient sites, the tourists are enabled to enjoy Ibiza by discovering and then appreciating the rich past that is beneath the modern façade.
